Recent technological, economic and social changes appear likely to ensure that the development of significant levels of thinking skills becomes a more central and direct aim of education, including vocational education. There is an argument that teaching critical thinking/logical reasoning skills should assume more prominence in vocational programs.
In response to these issues, the authors conducted an exploratory study of the critical thinking skills of vocational teachers. The findings of the study indicated that both trade-level and sub-professional vocational teachers in the NSW TAFE system have low levels of competence in thinking critically, especially when their abilities were compared with those of American adults. They concluded that there is a real need to include critical thinking as an integral component of TAFE teacher education courses. Show less

Two major limitations of labour market forecasting are discussed. The first is a methodological bias which over-emphasises the Government’s role in meeting industry’s training needs. The second is the lack of recognition of possible changes to the type and mix of skills needed in the future. The paper argues that it is only through detailed information collected on skills, technology and work organisation at the level of the enterprise/industry that indications of future skill and training requirements can be made. The author recently spent time in West Germany examining aspects of German vocational teacher training relevant for teachers in the network of Volkshochschulen (VHS) in that country. The VHS carry out a similar role to Australian TAFE colleges, and provide teacher training opportunities for VHS teachers.
Although there were some similarities in the vocational teacher training topics covered, German teacher training for VHS teachers does not follow our tradition of direction to desired teaching/learning competencies via structured curricula and set practice and reinforcement. Rather, the emphasis is on teacher inner self-awareness through full understanding of the needs of late adolescent and adult students. Some aspects of this approach may have value in any future reassessment of Australian vocational teacher education or staff development. Show less

The paper uses Pearson correlation analysis to establish the performance pattern of technology education students in mathematics, science and technology-based courses. It shows that even though the students enrolled in the technology education courses are often not those who have strong backgrounds in science and mathematics, there is a strong relationship between their performance in science and mathematics and their performance in the technology-based courses. The paper cautions on the probable consequences of reduced emphasis on science and mathematics for technology students, and elaborates on the serious implications of such a situation for technological development. This case study is one component of a national competency-based training pilot project focusing on assessment and competency-based training (CBT), with particular reference to teaching and learning approaches. The project was recently undertaken by the Office of Vocational Education, Training and Employment Commission, Queensland, and received funding assistance from the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET). One research strategy employed in the project involved the completion of five case studies, which examined CBT and assessment issues in different ‘real life’ contexts. These contexts included public and enterprise providers of training where CBT had been operational for some time. The case study reported in this paper examines CBT and assessment issues within the Stanwell Skills Development Programme, which provides training at the Stanwell Power Station in Rockhampton, Queensland. This case study highlights some of the challenges faced by an enterprise provider of training in the area of assessment and CBT. Show less

This paper reports a study which investigated the impact of institutional influences upon the attendance behaviour of part-time students in a certificate course in TAFE. Students’ satisfaction levels with four institutional influences were surveyed: curriculum relevance, student learning factors, student/lecturer relations, and administrative policies and procedures. The study found that dropout respondents recorded significantly lower satisfaction levels that persisters in the case of student/lecturer relations and curriculum relevance. The findings suggest that key institutional variables are strongly linked with the attendance behaviour of part-time students in TAFE. Show less
